The key goes back on the nail

The enchanting table is shared. The jars are not a market.

One bulb. It stays off when you leave.

I keep the cellar key because last spring the light ran for a week and nobody could swear they had been the last one down. A shared room with no last person is just a room that spends money and smells warm. The nail is beside the door. The key starts on the nail and ends on the nail. If that sounds like a nursery rule, good. Nursery rules are the ones people follow.

The table downstairs is for anyone who needs it. You do not book it and you do not leave your work spread out as a claim. The jars on the left are stores, not a counter. If you use the last of something, you say so on Friday or on the board the same night. Bas finished the string and put the empty spool on the table. That was the right shape of apology. Ingrid's new spool, when it arrives, goes on the stair.

People new to the hall sometimes treat the cellar as atmosphere. It is a room with a bad stair and a good table. Atmosphere is the window upstairs, and even that is just rain. Come down for a reason, and come up having returned the key. If you dry off after the bridge, you are welcome, and the bulb still goes off.
